How to draw and sign in Google Docs

Whether you want to add diagrams, flowcharts, shapes, word art, or even a freehand drawing that includes signatures, Google Docs has you covered with Google Drawings. The tool is embedded in Google Docs (and other Google applications like Sheets) that provides functions such as charts, tables, and multiple formatting tools that you can use directly in Google Docs. Here’s how to draw on Google Docs using Google Drawings.

Draw and sign in Google Docs

Google Docs native drawing feature has limited functionality, but can be useful for users who want to add diagrams, some basic shapes, word arts, or just sign a document. You can also import images or art from Google Drive or your computer’s local storage.

one. To start drawing in Google Docs, open an existing or new document and place your cursor in the document when you want to add a drawing.

two. Now select Insert> Drawing> + New option to create a new drawing file.

3. This will open the Google Drawings tool in a pop-up view at the top of Google Docs.

Four. Here you can choose tools like shape, text box, lines, actions, etc. on the toolbar to start drawing or adding shapes. Each element, such as text or shape, can be moved freely on the blank canvas.

5. Once done, click Save and close option.

There is no option to open the Google Drawings app directly from Docs. So you can’t just switch to google drawing if you need any tools that are not available in the popup. But you open Google Drawing directly, create a drawing, and then add it to your documents using Drive. That’s how.

Import drawings from Google drawings

one. Opened Google drawing and create your masterpiece.

two. Once you are done editing in Google Drawing, it will automatically save the file to Google Drive. You can click on the folder icon next to the title and move the file to the desired location in Drive.

3. Once done, go back to Documents and go to Insert> Drawing> From Unit to select the saved Google drawing file that you created to add to the Google Docs document.

Remember that any changes you make to the Google Drawings file later will also affect the drawing in your documents in real time. Stay in sync.

How to draw freehand in Google Docs

You also have the option to draw freehand. This is the number of people who sign your PDF files for free. Technically, you can use a mouse, but using a stylus or touchpad makes for better results. I normally use it for signing, but you can use it to draw anything as it has all the options you need such as font size, colors, etc.

one. Just open Documents and select Insert> Drawing> + New. You can also create directly in Google Drawings and insert it into Docs later.

two. Here in the pop-up window, click Line> Scribble option.

3. Now use a mouse or trackpad to start drawing. You will notice an option in the toolbar to change the size and color of the brush.

Four. Once done, click Save and close to add your drawing to Google Docs.

How to draw on an image in Google Docs

one. You have the option of drawing on an image directly in Documents. Just as before, open documents and select Insert> Drawing> + New.

two. Click on the Image icon at the end of the toolbar.

3. You can upload an image, add with URL, select from your Google Photos or Google Drive, or even search the web directly to add an image.

Four. Once the image is added, continue drawing on it as you normally do. Once done, click Save and close.

That’s it, you will add the image and also your drawing on top.

How to draw with third-party applications

Google Drawings is good for basic drawing, but very limited. Using third-party applications offers advanced tools, a greater variety of forms, and better formatting options. For example, in the application, you can choose layouts, vertical tree, horizontal flow, etc. These tools help you create flowcharts and Venn diagrams so easily that you don’t have to add shapes over and over again to continue with the flowchart. Similarly, you can also try other third party apps like Lucid graphics Y Smart drawing. Just install the plugin in Google Docs and get started.

Once installed, you can create and work on them directly from Google Drive> New and select the application you want to work with.

Now in Google Docs, you can put your cursor where you want to add the diagram and then select the option Accessories on the toolbar.

Then select the plugin you are working on and then click Insert diagram to add the Drive diagram.

How to sign PDF files in Google Docs

one. Upload the PDF file to Google Drive and then right-click on it to open it with Google Docs.

two. Click on Insert> Drawing> New to open the drawing tool.

3. Please select Writing under the Line menu.

Four. Once you have signed and are satisfied with the end result, click Save and close.

5. Now you can move or align the drawing (sign) in the desired position.

6. Now go to File> Download and select Pdf to export and download the file again in PDF format but with the sign.

Summary: Draw in Google Docs

I use the drawing feature in Google Docs to sign PDF files and the built-in options work fine for me. But if you are looking for more drawing tools, I will definitely recommend Lucid Charts for flowcharts and other graph-related drawings.
