6 Ways To Fix Messenger Notification Sound Not Working On Mobile Devices

Not a day goes by without us opening the Facebook Messenger application. Whether it’s to talk to family members or to receive messages from company team members, we open Facebook Messenger almost every day. What happens if it stops playing the notification sound for a new message or call? It occurs when the required permission or option does not meet your settings or due to an error. Here are all the possible solutions you can use to fix Messenger notification sound not working on Android and iPhone.

Messenger notification sound does not work on Android and iPhone

We have mentioned separate steps for both mobile operating systems separately and mention the platform name in the header when necessary to save you time. Please note that we have included screenshots of the Android stock. However, you can perform the same steps on another device running a different ROM.

1. Check the notification settings

Before heading to other options, it is better to check first if you have enabled notifications for Messenger app or not. Sometimes we disable different features by mistake. If it happens to you, then there is a possibility of facing such problem regardless of operating system. Did you know that the Messenger application comes with many such settings that you have to go through?

Android Users

If you are an Android user, follow these steps:

First, open the Messenger application on your mobile and tap on the profile picture visible in the upper left corner. Here you can find a setting called Notifications and sounds. It is available in the preferences section. Play it.

Now make sure it’s on. Although Facebook Messenger does not allow you to silence notifications forever, you can block them for a specific time. Even if that’s the case, activate the corresponding button to activate notifications.

Next, you need to check the Notification sound. As this is mainly a sound issue, you need to set a valid file as the notification sound. To verify this setting, touch the Notification sound option and choose the desired sound you want to play for notifications. Similarly, tap on Ringtone and choose a sound you want to play when someone calls you on Messenger.

In other words, you can try to change the notification sound for Facebook Messenger and check if it solves the problem or not. Other than that, toggle the Sounds in the app to turn it on. Note that if it’s already on, don’t change the settings.

IOS or iPhone users:

The iOS version of the Messenger app doesn’t show as many in-app settings as Android does. However, it is recommended to follow these steps to turn on Messenger notifications on iOS.

Open the Messenger app and tap on your profile photo visible in the upper left corner. Discover the Notifications and sounds settings and touch it.

Make sure these next two settings are enabled.

  • Show previews
  • While using the app

Otherwise, activate the respective buttons to activate the notification sound and the preview.

2. Disable Do not disturb

Do not disturb is a setting that can make or undo notifications on your phone. Whether you are using an Android or iOS device, both platforms have similar features that you should check out.

Android Users:

There are two ways to check whether you have enabled Do Not Disturb or DND on your Android phone or not. The first method is relatively simpler than the second, since it requires several steps to follow.

Most phone models have a one-touch do not disturb on / off button in the notification menu. Appears when you slide down the status bar. If you can find the respective option and it is enabled, tap on it to disable Do Not Disturb.

Second, you can find the option in Settings app. Since different ROMs have this option in different places, it’s best to search for “do not disturb” in the Settings app. After that, use the associated option to disable this functionality.

IOS or iPhone users:

On your iPhone, you can check out two different Do Not Disturb settings. The first is included in the Messenger app and the second can be found in the Settings app (the native Do Not Disturb option). To get started, open the Messenger app, tap your profile photo, select Notifications and sounds and toggle the Do not bother button.

As previously stated, the second is included in the Settings app. Open the Settings app and go to Do not bother menu. Once you are inside, change the Do not bother to disable this feature.

3. Notification disabled for specific contacts

If you mute a conversation, you will not receive notifications from that specific contact. In other words, the Messenger app will not play the notification sound when it sends you a message.

Android Users:

Open a conversation in the app and tap the info icon visible in the upper right corner. Tap on the Notifications Y Unmute the conversation options accordingly.

It should activate the sound of the person.

IOS or iPhone users:

Open a conversation in the Messenger app and tap the person’s name or profile photo. Then touch the Turn on sound to do the job.

4. Check the phone notification settings

Whether you’re using Android or iOS, both platforms offer some settings to manage notifications for a specific app like Messenger. Although Android has more settings than iOS, you can follow the steps depending on your device.

Android Users:

Open the Settings app and go to Apps and notifications > Select Delivery courier > tap on the Notifications option. It opens up a bunch of settings that you should check like:

  • All “Notifications” notifications
  • Chats and calls
  • Group chat mentions
  • Stories
  • Other
  • All “Activity Indicators” notifications
  • Incoming calls
  • Call in progress
  • Share location on
  • Active chat heads

You need to make sure that all these settings are enabled. If not, change the respective buttons.

IOS or iPhone users:

Open the Settings app and go to Notifications> Messenger. Now check these settings:

  • The Allow notifications setting must be enabled.
  • Lever Sounds to enable.

5. Clear the application cache (Android)

On Android, if an application has stopped working or malfunctions, the easiest way to eliminate the problem is to reset the application. Unfortunately, iOS users cannot do it on their iPhone.

Locate the Messenger icon in the app drawer and hold it until you get the Application information option. Play it. Now do the following:

one: Tap on the Forced stop button to terminate the application.

two: Tap on the Storage and cache option.

3: Tap on the Clear cache Y Empty storage options, respectively.

If that doesn’t solve your problem, it’s better to reinstall the app. Sometimes these problems can occur due to an error.

6. Factory reset (Android, iOS)

The last but not least solution is to return your device to factory defaults. Sometimes old devices can malfunction due to adware or malware. If that happens, the best way to get rid of that problem is by restarting your device.

Still no sound for Messenger notifications

The fastest way to get rid of the sound problem without Messenger notifications on Android and iPhone is by following these methods. As is the case for many reasons, it is best to follow all these steps one at a time. If nothing works, you can check out some Facebook Messenger alternatives for Android.
