Everybody has a YouTube channel nowadays and there is no denying that we love uploading memories (since this is the age of vlogging). But sometimes, there are certain videos that we want to save for ourselves or share with some. YouTube’s private video feature is a great way to keep a mix of private and public videos. So if you want to share it with your friends or family, here’s how to share a private YouTube video, along with a feature comparison with a public video that we usually select.
Public vs private YouTube videos
Before we start talking about sharing private YouTube videos, here is an overview of how a public video is different from a private one. First of all, when you upload a video (more on that later) you have an option to post it or keep it private. Second, it doesn’t appear in any video recommendations, search results, or on the channel. Lastly, users are notified when the video is uploaded similar to a public video.
|Shown in video recommendation or search results.||Yes||No|
|Shows on the channel||Yes||No|
|Subscribers are notified about upload||Yes||No|
|Anyone can see it||Yes||No|
|Number of users with whom it can be shared||Unlimited||fifty|
How to share a private YouTube video
You can easily share a private YouTube video by following the steps listed below. Since most of us use and upload videos from PC, let’s take a look at how you can do the same in Windows 10.
1. How to make a public video private and share it
If you’re a beginner, keep in mind that you can choose to keep a video private right when you first upload it. As you can see in the screenshot below, it goes through three stages every time you upload a video: details, video elements, and visibility.
To upload and post a private video, all you have to do is choose private in the last tab. While you’re at it, you also have the option to add users that you want to share the video with. Click Share privately to add users who will have access to the video.
In the privately shared video pop-up, enter the email addresses you would like to give access to. You also have two additional options on the same tab. If you want everyone you are inviting to receive an email notification, check this option.
The other option comes into play when you use a workplace account and want to share it with anyone who is added to that closed workspace.
2. How to share a private YouTube video (YouTube Studio)
If you already have a public video, you will need to make it private in order to share it via invitations. To get started, open YouTube and click the Profile icon in the upper right corner of the page. Now from the context menu, select YouTube Studio what is a section where you manage your videos and content on his YouTube channel.
You will see the channel dashboard with details about your channel’s performance and analytics. Now we will move on to the video section, which shows all the content of the channel on one page. To open the video section, click Content in the sidebar.
On this page, you can change any video from public to private and vice versa. First of all, find the video you want to share, if it is public, it will be reflected in the visibility section to the right of each video. To change the visibility, click Public and select Private. As soon as you do, a new Private Share icon similar to the one above will appear where you can add email addresses.
In case your video is already private, all you have to do is click the Share privately button and add email addresses. That’s it.
3. How to share a private YouTube video (mobile)
Fun fact: YouTube Studio also has a dedicated app. Unfortunately, you cannot share videos by creating an email invitation like we did in the previous steps. All you can do is change the visibility of a video from public to private.
If you don’t have access to a PC, you can still go ahead and share your private videos using the desktop method on your phone’s browser. Since I use Chrome, this is how you can do it in Chrome. First of all, launch Chrome and open YouTube. Click on the three-dot menu icon in the upper right corner and select the desktop site option. This will show you the YouTube site in desktop view. Now all you have to do is follow the same steps that we discussed in the previous step.
Closing remarks: sharing private YouTube videos
So now that you can easily share a YouTube video, I hope you can build a bigger video base on your channel without giving your subscribers a clue. I also hope YouTube will eventually provide more features and controls in its mobile app, as most of us have access to mobile phones.
