Best Video Trimmer Apps for Android and iOS (2020)

While there is no shortage of video editing apps for smartphones, most of these editing tools have many options that the average user will not use. If you are looking for a way to simply trim videos for Instagram, Facebook, or IGTV, here are the best and simplest video trimmer apps for Android and iOS with no watermark or restrictions.

Best video trimming apps

1. Apple Photos

Before heading to download a video editor, the native Photos app on iOS allows you to natively trim videos. To do that, open the Photos app on your iPhone and select the video you want to trim. Next, tap on the Edit option in the upper right corner of the screen. At the bottom, you will have the “rotate and crop” icon, tap on it and you can crop your video.

Cropping here is manual and would have a cropping guide overlaid on the video. You can move it by holding the edges to zoom in. Also, you can move the cropping overlay to arrange the subject within the cropping. Once you’re happy with the trim, tap the “Done” button at the bottom right to save the trim video. Keep in mind that it will overwrite your previous version of the video, so keep a backup handy.

Unfortunately, Google Photos can edit videos on Android, but it cannot trim them.

What is good?

  • No additional downloads required

It’s not?

  • No built-in templates for trimming videos

2. Vita

Unfortunately, Google Photos can edit videos on Android, but it cannot trim them. so, we have to use a third-party app on Android. Vita is the most advanced and mobile-friendly video editor I’ve used in a long time. The user interface is well designed to be used in portrait mode with the thumb. To trim a video, tap the “Ratio” option at the bottom. Once this is done, you will have a host of aspect ratios to choose from.

Unlike Apple’s Photos app, where you have to crop according to your instincts, Vita provides you with cropping templates like 1: 1, 16: 9, 4: 5, etc., which are very useful. For example, 16: 9 is the ideal aspect ratio for YouTube, while 4: 5 is for Instagram posts and 9:16 is for Instagram stories. I really liked the aspect ratio templates. Other than that, Vita has a full suite of other video editing tools. Vita also has a huge library of stock images, videos, background music, and text templates. It’s more like Canva with a video editor.

What is good?

  • Integrated templates for cropping
  • 1080p export without watermark
  • Built-in stock videos, photos, and background music for enhanced editing

3. Fast

Quik by GoPro is the simplest video editing app for mobile devices. As soon as you import your video, Quik automatically edits it. You can tap on the edit icon at the bottom and you will get a set of editing tools. The second option allows you to trim the video. Then tap on it and it will toggle between 3 crop templates: Cinema, Portrait, Square. Now cinema is something I would upload to YouTube, while Square is great for Insta posts, while Portrait is suitable for Insta and IGTV stories.

Quik, by default, adds a quick promo at the end of the video. However, you can remove it by tapping at the bottom.

4. Kapwing

Kapwing is a simple and easy to use web application that allows you to resize and crop videos. Since it is a web application, you can access it from any device. It has a set of built-in presets for Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, Linkedin, etc. that crop your video to the ideal aspect ratio. In case you upload similar videos to multiple social media platforms, Kapwing is the ideal choice. Furthermore, it also has a complete online video editor with cloud storage.

The only caveat with Kapwing is that it doesn’t allow you to upload videos that exceed 250MB. So in case you are recording 4k or 1080p60, you will have to compress your video before uploading. It offers a premium variant starting at $ 20 / month that increases the upload size to 1GB.

What is good?

  • Numerous built-in templates for cropping videos according to a social media platform
  • Free 1080p video export without watermark

It’s not?

  • Video export process is a bit slow

5. InShot

InShot is probably one of the most powerful video editors for Android. Like in Kapwing, you get clipping templates according to social media platforms like Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, etc. My favorite option is that you can customize the background of the video in case it doesn’t fit the aspect ratio. Apart from this, InShot also offers a host of editing tools for adding transitions, correcting color footage, adding graphics and text, etc.

InShot provides a watermark on the video that can be removed by paying a one-time fee of $ 2.99.

What is good?

  • Full video editor
  • 1080p export option

It’s not?

  • Filigree
  • Full screen ads

Closing words

I use Abraia and Vita for most of my video editing and trimming needs. It is primarily the ideal option for most people. On a side note, Google has released an AI video tool called AutoFlip Recently. Therefore, you may see many video editors in the future who may automatically object to tracking and crop your videos for Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, etc.
