Several Facebook Messenger users are complaining about a strange problem. The app keeps changing the sound of notifications automatically. That can be annoying because after a while you get used to the melody. Many users like to use custom notification sounds because they like it, it sounds better, and it helps them differentiate between different messaging app notifications.
Today, we will see where this error comes from, how to fix Messenger keeps changing the notification sound problem, and how to change the notification sound in Messenger to the one you want. Let’s start.

How to change the notification sound of Facebook Messenger in the application
Open Messenger on your smartphone and tap on Profile Image> Notifications & Sounds. Then you will tap on Notification sound here to change the message tone and the Ringtone option to change the melody of the call.
Here’s the thing. Messenger does not offer any way to select custom notification sounds. However, what it does is pull notification sounds from the system. We know from experience that no two smartphones are the same and that every manufacturer likes to ship phones with their own custom sounds. So when you open the list, you will see different sound files than what I see on my Mi phone.
Therefore, the notification sounds will vary from device to device. There is no way to select a sound file that you downloaded from the web here. As sad as it is, it is. There is also no way to select a different notification sound in Messenger for Android for group messages. Messenger is not very flexible when it comes to notifications, eh?

Here’s the bummer. If you are using an iPhone or iPad, you cannot change the default notification sound either. This applies to both messages and call alert tones. What you can do is disable the notifications in the sound option in the app. That will mute the sound when you have the app open on your phone.
Another option is Do Not Disturb. That will disable all Messenger sound notifications even when the app is not open or the phone is locked.
How to change Messenger notification sound permanently from settings
There are many users who complain on how the Messenger app is changing the notification sound automatically on their phones. Most of these users say that a file name ‘2131755087’ is set as the default ringtone even though they don’t have this file installed.
The incident is happening only with Android users, however it is visible in various smartphone manufacturers with different OEMs. I found a simple solution to resolve this error forever.
Forget the Messenger app. Open Android Settings and go to Notifications & Status Bar> App Notifications> Messenger.
Now you can customize different notification sounds for different types of Messenger messages. Touch Chat & calls and then Ringtone to choose a ringtone when you receive a message or call.
You can also change the notification sounds for group chat messages and mentions. This setting is not available even in the Messenger app, as we discussed earlier.
In fact, there is a separate notification sound setting for stories, calls in progress, location sharing, and chat heads. Just tap to open each setting and then select the Ringtone option to choose your favorite sound. By tapping the sound, it will play once, so you can judge whether you like it or not.
Other options include the ability to control whether you want to see notifications, hear any sound or just mute it, feel the vibration, and the LED light. These additional options are just the icing on the cake, in my opinion.

What’s worth noting is that the Android settings will take precedence over the Messenger app’s sound notifications. That means that even if the app is acting strange and changes the notification file randomly, you shouldn’t have to worry about a thing. Just set it and forget it.
Change notification sound for Facebook Messenger
There are two ways to change the Messenger notification sound, as you read above. One is to do it from the application, which is very limited and does not work for all users. Some users have also complained about a bug where the notification sound for Messengers changes automatically and often without their permission or consent. The way is much better that it works from the settings area of Android.
As always, if you’ve found another way to do it, please share it with us in the comments below.
