How to Play YouTube Music in the Background Without Premium

YouTube Music has a free ad-supported plan similar to Spotify. But unlike Spotify, it can’t play background music on the free tier. YouTube wants you to update. However, there are a few ways to play YouTube Music in the background without opting for a premium plan.

Stream YouTube music in the background

There may be services like YouTube Vanced, New Pipe, etc. to get the same functionality. But we are concentrating on the applications and methods that are legal.

1. YouTube Music website

Opening YouTube Music in the browser itself will not solve the problem. You should also use it as a desktop site to play songs in the background. This is how you can do it.

one. Open your browser and go to music.youtube.com. Now touch the three point menu icon and select Desktop site to open the website in desktop view.

two. Now you can play songs here and go back to the home screen to open another app.

This process works on both Android and iOS. The only downside is that you need to use the desktop site on mobile, which is not a pleasant experience.

Pros

  • You can play songs when the app is closed and the screen is off
  • You can access YouTube Music playlists and other functions.

Cons

  • Using desktop mode on the phone is not a good experience

2. Broadcast application

It is a free music player for YouTube Music. Like YouTube Music, it cannot play songs in the background, but it can be opened in the pop-up view. If using desktop mode in your phone’s browser is not the experience you are looking for, then you may want to consider this app.

one. Install the Stream application from Play Store and open it. The app requests permission to “draw over other apps” to enable the popup view. Tap on the Open configuration option.

two. Here select the Streaming app from the list and enable Allow visualization over other applications option.

3. Once done, go back to the Stream app and start playing a song. The song will start playing in the popup view directly even when you have the app open. Now you can go back to the home screen and do something else.

The only limitation is that you cannot play songs when the screen is off due to YouTube’s terms of use. All you can do is play a song in the pop-up view and continue using the phone. Considering you can’t even do that on YouTube Music, Stream is worth checking out.

Pros

  • Possibility of playing songs in the pop-up view.
  • Using the app layout is better than opening the website in desktop mode

Cons

  • Can’t play songs when screen is off
  • Background playback is only possible when popup view is enabled

3. Pi music player

YouTube terms may not agree to play songs when screen is off. But Pi Music Player has a catch. Instead of turning the phone off, turn on the power saving mode, which uses a black screen and reduces the brightness to a minimum, making it appear to have a screensaver or an always-on screen. That way you can use the pop-up view to use the phone while listening to music and the power saving mode to play a song when the screen is off.

one. Download and Install the Pi music player application from Play Store and open it. Grant the necessary permissions.

two. Once you are in the app, you can find all the available songs on your local storage as Pi Music Player is also a normal music player app at its core.

3. But swipe left to Discover tab and you will find songs that you can play online and works with YouTube Music. Now you can play any song from here and the app will ask for permission to “draw over other apps”. Click on Continue.

Four. Select the Pi Muisc Player App from the list and enable Allow visualization over other applications option.

5. But when you turn off the screen, it will stop playing the music with a pop-up message to use the power saving mode. You can turn the screen back on and touch the Resume option in the pop-up window.

6. It will activate power saving mode with a black screen, low brightness, and the option to swipe out of power saving mode.

Pi Music Player is a good alternative to bypass YouTube terms and offers a free solution without altering the desktop layout in the mobile browser.

Pros

  • Activate power saving mode while playing songs
  • Ability to open a popup view

Cons

  • Unable to access YouTube playlists.
  • Audio-only mode is not supported

4. Black screen of life

Black Screen of Life is an underrated app on the Play Store that uses the mobile’s proximity sensor to turn the screen black, similar to taking calls. Once activated, all you need to do is play songs directly in the YouTube Music app and block the proximity sensor with an object. That’s it, this app will turn off the screen by providing an option to listen to songs by turning off the screen.

one. First, download the Black screen of life application directly from Play Store. Now open the app and click on the pink circular button.

two. The circle turns green to indicate that the sensor is enabled. Now open YouTube Music and play any song.

3. Lock the proximity sensor on the top of your phone to turn off the screen.

The only downside to the app is that it is not designed to play background music. So when using this app, you still need to be in the YouTube Music app for the song to continue to play. Please use this app in conjunction with any of the three apps mentioned above to get the best possible result.

Pros

  • You can turn off the phone while playing YouTube Music songs

Cons

  • Unable to close YouTube Music app

Summary: YouTube music playing in the background

Although they are in multiple ways, using Stream combined with Black Screen of life is the method that I like to use. Stream app is clean and specially designed for playing YouTube songs. Use pop-up mode to play songs while using the phone. The Black Screen of Life application is useful for turning off my phone when it is not in use.
