4 Free VPNs That Work With Netflix (2018)

Looking for a free VPN that works with Netflix? Well, in January 2016, Netflix announced that it would start blocking VPNs, also known as virtual private networks, which allowed customers outside of the United States to watch American Netflix. Fast forward one year; Most paid VPN services no longer work on Netflix, much less a free one.

Although Netflix does not reveal exactly how it blocks VPNs, in general, they block the IP address associated with hosting providers that are commonly used by VPN providers. Which means that even if you set up a VPN on Digital Ocean and try to access Netflix through it, you still won’t be able to bypass geo-restrictions on Netflix.

There are a couple of blogs that recommend using Chrome extensions like Hello, or Tor browser etc, but after trying them I found out that they don’t, so you don’t have to mess around with them.

Don’t worry, there are a couple of free VPNs and proxy services that still work for Netflix. Although don’t expect them to be reliable. Remember you get what you pay for, no free service can be as good as a paid one. But overall, it can get the job done. So, let’s take a look at it.

None of the following free VPNs are reliable, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. However, at least one of the following always seems to be working.

one. HomebrewVPN – Free VPN that works with Netflix

HomeBrewVPN is a little-known free VPN that works with Netflix and allows you to watch all major video and audio streaming websites that are available to US viewers only. This means that with HomebrewVPN you can get US Netflix. And a music streaming service like Spotify or Pandora no matter where in the world you live.

Unlike other VPN services, homebrew does not have a dedicated app, which means that you will have to manually set up a VPN on your devices.

How to configure HomebrewVPN?

To get started, you will need to manually set up a VPN on your device. Each device has a different way of setting up a VPN, you can Google it. But simply put, it’s like logging into a server, that is, specifying the server’s URL and entering the username and password. You can find more information here.

Create a VPN server and enter the following details.

Server type: PPTP or L2TP or OpenVPN
Server address: server1.homebrewvpn.com
Username: homebrewvpn-us
Password: homebrewvpn

PPTP users: Encryption / 40-bit / 128-bit encryption is not supported.

L2TP Users – Optional Shared Key (required by iOS devices): 12345678

The free version of Homebrew works fine, although it is limited to 512 kbps; means it’s good enough to stream Netflix from 244p to 480p. While testing it for a few days (last check in July 2018), it worked on my Android (if you’re having trouble connecting, try restarting your device) but it didn’t work on macOS. And how people see it comment on Reddit, it stops working from time to time. I can’t expect much from a free solution.

two. Ultrasurf – Free VPN that works with Netflix

Ultrasurf is a popular tool for bypassing blocked websites. Unlike other VPNs on this list, Ultrasurf is a proxy, a proxy is like a VPN in most cases, but without encryption.

How to configure Ultrasurf?

The setup is simple. Download only Ultrasurf Chrome extension and turned it on. It does not require any login or software installation. Once installed, go to Netflix and search for ‘The Office (US)’ If you are not from the US and you can still watch this show, this means that you have successfully bypassed the country restrictions on Netflix.

It was developed to circumvent the so-called Great Firewall of China. However, some people doubt its authenticity as its server is from the US Ultrasurf is definitely not trustworthy, but for the most part it works well for Netflix from the desktop. The video quality was bad throughout and it didn’t work on Android devices either.

3. Nord VPN – Free Trial

NordVPN is one of the few VPNs that still works for Netflix. And even though it’s a paid service, they offer a 3-hour free trial that doesn’t require a credit card. However, it requires a valid email address (temporary email address does not work). After the 3-day trial, it costs $ 12 per month if you get the monthly plan or $ 5 per month if you pay for a full year.

The free version slows down your connection, although for example I got 2 Mb / s down and 0.8 Mb / s up, on my regular connection 8 Mb / s up and 8 Mb / s down.

How to set up NordVPN?

I tried the free version of NordVPN on macOS and Android, and it worked fine. The setup is pretty simple, create a free trial account, download and install the client, and switch to a specific country. That’s it. Now, you can bypass the country restriction on Netflix. Surprisingly, they also support torrents.

After a few unsuccessful attempts, NordVPN finally worked on my macOS. Also, the video quality was too low. I’m not sure if it’s for a free account or so. On Android, it didn’t work even after several tests. I mean, it was able to detect the US catalog, but when you click on the title, it doesn’t play the video. Even after restarting the device or trying a different device.

Four. Smart DNS proxy – Free Trial

Another better alternative is to use SmartDNS like: Smart DNS Proxy.

Smart DNS, unlike a VPN, does not change your IP address or encrypt your traffic, which means that your video transmission will be much faster. And the best part is, if you can configure Smart DNS Proxy on your router, all devices that are connected to your router will automatically bypass geo-restrictions. It is not necessary to configure it manually on each device.

How to set up NordVPN?

Setting up Smart DNS Proxy is a bit tricky compared to a VPN. To use their service, you need to change the DNS server of your computer, smartphone, or your router to that of the Smart DNS Proxy DNS servers. You can find the settings video-tutorial of each operating system on YouTube.

Smart DNS Proxy is not exactly a free VPN that works with Netflix, it is a paid service. However, we still include it in the list, because it is a 14-day free trial. Neither is a credit card required. So if you are looking to watch a new Netflix original for a week or two, you can try Smart DNS Proxy for 2 weeks for free. After the free trial, it costs $ 5 per month.

Free VPN that works with Netflix

So these were some free VPNs to bypass Netflix’s geo-restrictions. If you are on a mobile device you can go with Homebrew, on desktop browser Ultrasurf works reliably and if you are planning a vacation and want to save Netflix shows for offline, get the trial version of Nord VPN.

However, it goes without saying that none of these free methods are reliable. The bThe best long-term solution is to get a paid VPN like NordVPN or ExpressVPN, which apparently works well for Netflix, but is also quite expensive (around $ 15 per month). Smart DNS proxy is also another good option.
