By default, Google Meet automatically mutes everyone if there are more than 5 participants in the meeting. But if you join the first 5 people or if your meeting has fewer than 5 people, Meet will still keep the microphone on. Meet also did not turn off the video feed. So if you want to turn off both the audio and video feed all the time, you can easily do that with third-party extensions. Here’s how you can do that.
How to automatically mute and turn off video on Google Meet
Option 1: Google Meet Auto Disable Mic / Cam
To automatically mute and turn off video on Google Meet, open the Chrome extension store and search for “Google Meet Auto Disable Mic / Cam.” Alternatively, you can click this Link to open the extension.
Now click the “Add to Chrome” button and click “Add Extension” in the pop-up window to install the extension in your browser.
By default this will only disable the camera, you can also disable the microphone by opening the Google Meet website and starting a meeting. Now on the join page, you can see two new options, Automatically disable microphone and Automatically disable camera. Activate the check mark next to “Automatically turn off microphone.”
That’s it, you can reload the page to see how the feature works.
Option 2: Complete deactivation of the join screen
Before joining any meeting on Google Meet, you may have noticed a ‘Login Screen’ that checks your microphone and camera before joining. But if we are already disabling the microphone and camera by default, it makes no sense to keep the ‘Bonding screen’ as well. You can do this by installing an extension called Google Meet Enhanced Suite. This extension is a single destination for many Google Meet features such as push to talk, dark mode, timer, PIP mode, mute other participants, etc., along with automatic deactivation of microphone and camera and also deactivation of the bonding screen.
To do this, open the Chrome extension store and search for “Google Meet Enhancement Suite”. Alternatively, you can click this Link to open the extension page.
Now click the “Add to Chrome” button to install the extension.
Once installed, click on the extension icon in the upper right corner of the browser.
Here you can see all the features that Enhancement Suite can offer you. While there are many professional features available for a monthly subscription. You can get the deactivation features for free. To turn off the microphone and camera automatically, check the check mark next to “Auto Mute” and “Auto Video off.”
To disable the join screen completely, enable the check mark next to “Automatic join.”
That’s it, now you can check it out for yourself by starting an encounter. This extension will not completely lock the join screen from showing, you just click the Join Now button automatically every time.
There are some other extensions that do the same, but I found these two extensions more attractive as the extension “Auto Disable Mic / Cam” is minimal and straightforward, and “Meet Enhancement Suite” is for you if you want to really improve the extension of functions. from Google Meet. Anyway, use only one extension to disable as chances are it will malfunction if you are using multiple extensions for the same purpose.
